From Raw Materials to the Road Under Your Wheel. Here's How We Build Every Hartex Tyre.

A tyre looks simple. A circle of rubber, some tread, done. But the tyre between you and the road is the result of a carefully ordered process — materials chosen for specific jobs, layers built in a specific sequence, cured under heat and pressure, and tested before it leaves the factory. Here's the honest version of how it works.

Step-1 Materials Come Together

Five Materials. Each One Has a Job.

Every Hartex tyre starts with a set of carefully selected materials. Compound — the rubber formulation — goes into the tread and gives the tyre its grip, rolling efficiency, and durability character. Nylon goes into the casing, forming the structural fabric of the tyre. Cotton is also used in casing construction for specific applications. Aramid and steel go into the bead — the reinforced edge that locks onto the rim. Where puncture protection is included, a nylon or rubber breaker layer is added at this stage.
Compound (rubber)
Tread — grip, durability, rolling resistance
Nylon
Casing — structural fabric of the tyre
Cotton
Casing — used in specific construction types
Steel / Aramid
Bead — the edge that locks onto the rim
Nylon or rubber breaker
Protection layer — puncture and impact resistance

Step 2 — The Casing Is Built

The Skeleton That Gives the Tyre Its Shape.
The casing is the structural layer of the tyre — the woven fabric that holds everything together under pressure. Nylon threads are laid in precise angles and counts. The TPI (threads per inch) of the casing determines how the finished tyre will feel: lower TPI gives a firm, durable construction; higher TPI gives a finer, more supple ride. Where the tyre will be tubeless, the casing construction is adapted to hold an airtight seal without a tube.

Step 3 — Protection Is Added

The Layer Between You and a Puncture..
If the tyre specification calls for puncture protection, it's added at this stage — either a cross-woven nylon fabric layer (X Shield or X Shield Pro) or a rubber breaker layer (Tough or Tough+), or a combination of both for Forte. Not every tyre carries a protection layer — this is determined by the product specification. Protection is integrated into the construction here, not added on top afterwards.

Step 4 — The Bead Is Set

The Edge That Holds Everything to the Rim.
The bead is the reinforced edge of the tyre that locks onto the rim. Steel wire beads are rigid and robust — right for everyday durability. Aramid (folding) beads are lighter, more packable, and better suited to performance and tubeless builds. The bead type is set at the construction stage and determines one of the tyre's key characteristics.

Step 5 — Tyre Building Machine (TBM)

Where All the Layers Come Together as One.
The tyre building machine assembles compound, casing, protection layer, and bead into a single unified structure. Layers are placed in precise sequence at precise tensions. At this point the tyre is still uncured — correctly assembled but not yet vulcanised. This is called the green tyre.

Step 6 — Curing

Heat, Pressure, and the Moment the Tyre Becomes a Tyre.
The green tyre goes into a curing press under controlled heat and pressure. This is vulcanisation — heat causes the rubber to cross-link at a molecular level, transforming the assembled layers into the durable, unified structure of the finished tyre. The tread pattern is moulded in at this stage.

Step 7 — Inspection

Nothing Leaves Without Being Checked.
Every tyre goes through a two-stage inspection before it leaves the factory — visual checks covering surface defects, tread consistency, and label accuracy, followed by performance checks. Details of the Hartex testing procedure are available on our Quality & Testing page.
